Rep. Craig Staats has voiced concerns over Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed budget for Pennsylvania, labeling it as financially unsustainable. Staats warned that the $51.47 billion budget could undermine Pennsylvania’s long-term financial health.
The budget proposal set forth by Governor Shapiro plans to increase spending by $3.57 billion, amounting to a 7.5% rise over the current year. This increase is slated to be funded through the depletion of the remaining $2.89 billion budget surplus, alongside a $1.6 billion transfer from the Rainy Day Fund, which Staats cautions may leave the state vulnerable to future economic downturns.
“This approach sets Pennsylvania up for serious fiscal challenges in the years ahead,” Staats stated. He further emphasized, “Pennsylvania families and businesses budget responsibly. They expect the same from their government. This budget is built on wishful thinking rather than fiscal responsibility, and taxpayers deserve better."
Staats also criticized the energy policies outlined in the budget, particularly the Pennsylvania Climate Emissions Reduction Act (PACER). He claimed that PACER enacts an unfair carbon tax on coal and natural gas power plants, which he predicts will result in higher energy bills for consumers. "Additionally, his budget calls for oppressive energy policies through the Pennsylvania Climate Emissions Reduction Act (PACER) energy tax," Staats added.
The proposal by Governor Shapiro marks the onset of a drawn-out budget process that will involve extensive Appropriations Committee hearings and detailed negotiations with the House, Senate, and governor.
